Virtual Collaboration Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Virtual Collaboration - Essay Example tal technologies that enable organizations or individuals to collaborately plan, design, develop, manage, and research products, services, and innovative IT and E-Commerce applicationsâ⬠(Turban, McLean and Wetherbe 144). The current discourse hereby aims to present virtual collaboration through lessons learned from in-class and online events summaries, as perceived to be applicable in a future career. Virtual collaboration through social events was recognized to be the most popular, by far. The most relevant lessons learned from social events include the following: (1) selection of topics which are interesting to prospective participants; (2) using communication medium that would reach the target audience: social networking sites, email, smartphones, among others; (3) use of innovative approaches, like gamification; and (4) assignment of roles, or delegation of tasks by eventsââ¬â¢ organizers. One learned that there are disparities in techniques in in-class versus online events. For in-class social events, there are opportunities for face-to-face interactions to augment virtual collaboration, when needed. For instance, organizers could require weekly face-to-face group meetings to resolve conflicts, iron out concerns, and monitor the progress of assigned tasks. In contrast, in purely on-line social events where there are no opportunities for face-to-face interactions, the participants rely solely on online or electronic medium to communicate. As such, there should be regular interaction using various social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter) and other electronic medium (Skype, university sites, email). Major lessons learned from in-class activities that enriched oneââ¬â¢s understanding of the topic are categorized as follows: (1) enhance opportunities for personal interaction with other members of the class which improved oneââ¬â¢s confidence in interpersonal communication; (2) commitment to cultural diversity within the university encouraged oneââ¬â¢s respect for

Understanding cultural and ethnic identity of United States Essay
Understanding cultural and ethnic identity of United States - Essay Example Culture is people's way of life. It denotes what a people value and abides to as normal. It is that complex whole of a people's collective experience in life. It includes religion, political, economical, ethics, social and aesthetic. 'It is the sentiments of belonging or connection to ones larger culture as in case with U.S minority ethnic groups mixing their ethnic oriented values with some of the larger US cultural values' (p94). A people's culture can have strong or weak cultural salience.Cultural identity is something larger than ethnic identity; it relates the culture of one group in relation to the culture of another group especially when one group is dominant. Strong cultural salience reflects weak cultural identity and the opposite applies.Ting-Toomey defines ethnicity as an inheritance where members of a particular group perceive each other as emotionally bounded by a common set of traditional, worldviews, history, and heritage. (Ting-Toomey & Chung, 2005).It is difficulty t o trace ones ethnic origin especially where one is from parents of multiple ethnic backgrounds. This can go back to great grandparents who had mixed ethnic heritage. Group membership among communities defines social identity along the ethnic cultural boundaries( Ting-Toomey & Chung, 2005).The issue of ethnic and cultural identity has been a dominant and salient issue of many minority ethnic groups for along time... This dictated the way and how far they could practice their ethnicity and culture. Their cultures and ethnicity became threaten by this dominant culture and therefore minority community became more ethnic and cultural aware of their origin as people '...from somewhere... ' (p94) In order to understand the significance of an individual's ethnicity, it is imperative to understand the ethnic value content and ethnic salience of that person's ethnic identity salience in particular. A closer look at different ethnic backgrounds of American people, we can identify a European or a Latin, Asian and Native American by looking at the salient aspect of individualism and collectiveness. A European will tend to exhibit individualist tendencies whereas Asian, Latino and Native American will have in-group orientation thus collectiveness. Strange enough African -American will tend to blend both collectivism and individualism for the purpose of survival and adaptation. (Ting-Toomey & Chung, 2005). The adaptability process of minority groups in America can be analyzed along a number of factors on the ground. First the social economic situations of the host culture: America is mythically known as 'land of great opportunities'. Therefore, immigrants were welcomed by the host culture, as there were a lot to share since the economy was doing well. This could not be the case where the host culture is experiencing economical hardship. The host would become hostile to the immigrant and this means very difficult for the newcomers to settle and adapt to new cultural environment ( Ting-Toomey & Chung, 2005). In addition, consciously or unconsciously, the host culture may have a preconceived definition of the immigrant as part of their bigger human family or aliens or visitors. This

Retail Industry Comparison of China and United States Essay
Retail Industry Comparison of China and United States - Essay Example Retailing has advanced with technology and now we have what we call online retailing as well. There are different types of retail outlets. They are classified according to the products they sell and by marketing strategies. There are the types that do not fall in the two and are classified as others. Retailers of products are food products retailers, hard goods retailers and soft goods retailers. Retailers classified by marketing strategies are the most. They include, department stores, discount store, warehouse stores, variety stores, demographic retailers, Mom-And-Pop retailers, specialty stores, boutiques, general store, hypermarkets, supermarkets, malls, Category specialist, e-tailers, and vending machines. Automated retail stores and big box stores fall in the others category (Pradhan & Pradhan, 2009). Retail Industry in China Chinaââ¬â¢s retail industry is now ranked as the second largest in the world after the USA. The chain stores and Chain supermarkets serving the daily n eeds of the people appeared in china in around a decade ago and they rapidly grew to the extent of being the second largest retail market worldwide. However, there is no dominant player in the retail industry despite its rapid growth, unlike the USA that has dominant players like Wal-Mart and others. Its rapid growth can be owed to the government of China in 1992. The government launched a series of policies to promote fast, orderly and healthy growth of the industry. One of the policies was permitting foreign investment in retailing. The government of China, by 1997, had approved about twenty-four foreign-invested stores. Hundreds of foreign-invested retailing, however, had been established before then after seeking approval from the provincial and municipal authorities (Zhen, 2007). The retailing sector of China is highly fragmented accommodating both medium sized and small retailers. This is different with the United States that have a dominating presence of big retailers. This i s because of the barriers local market access. China does however brag of a wide range of retail formats. Department stores are one of the earliest formats of retail outlets. They were very popular before but they are now facing competition and fighting to stay ahead. Examples of department stores in China are Parkson, Beijing Cuiwei, Golden Eagle, and Shenzhen Suibao. Another retail outlet format is the hypermarkets whose development are owed to the international retailers. Wal-Mart, Mart Shanghai, Trust-Mart, Tesco, and Carrefour are examples of hypermarkets. Supermarkets are another retail outlet that is facing competition. Domestic players dominate this highly fragmented market. Examples of supermarkets in china are Baijia Supermarket and A-Best Supermarket. Convenience stores are not fully developed retailers but are already facing competition from especially from domestic chains. Quick of LianHua is an example of convenience store in China. Specialty stores are retail outlets dominated by domestic players with foreign investment being very limited. Examples are GOME and Suning. Discount stores are still evolving and the first one was introduced in 2003 by Carrefour. Franchising retailing constitutes for around three percent of the total retail market of china with a huge potential for growth in the future. Examples are Pizza Hut, MacDonaldââ¬â¢s, KFC, and 7-eleven. Direct selling is another retailing format of china. Its potential for future growth is large. Examples of direct selling retailers are AMWAY, Avon,

In today's society, a certain type of look can be the explanation on how and why someone gets noticed for a modeling contract or a movie role. In this century, everything is better, gaudier, and much more enchanting than before so why would women not want to be the girl on television who has everything she desired? These women, depending on their looks, can play a variety of roles on television; the villain, the geek, the social climber, and the girl next door. But what do they all have in common? Their beauty. These women that are seen on television are gorgeous, skinny, and mainly Caucasian. When we see these different types of women on the screen, we attempt to emulate them and the television shows know this because it boosts their ratings. Honestly, how many people will continue to watch a show where it was about someone's life and it wasn't successful because of the way the leading lady looked like? On the other hand, the female stereotypes continue to go on in the media we wi tness every day. The media's representation of women plays a significant role on the effects of self esteem and body image issues. When you watch television, you see women selling everything from clothes to cars because of their body image. The portrayal of women as sex symbols has been around for a very long time. But, what was considered as 'attractive' has changed. Take Marilyn Monroe as an example. She was, and still is considered, one of the biggest sex symbols of the past generation, but she "wore a dress size fourteen" (Gender Roles and the Media) while the models of this generation who are over a size five are considered plus-size. Saying what being beautiful is can make people do extreme things to be what the media considers acceptable. Th... ...but women are now the super moms, the CEO's of a major corporation. Women as a whole are clearly ditching the dainty housewife look and are now entering the workforce head on. Women's role in the media are undoubtedly changing just like in everyday life. Television shows have to be relatable to their audience. So if their audience is a woman in her 30's-40's, it makes sense for the show to have a working mother as the main character. Even though there have been developments made in the media, there are still many negative characteristics concerning women's role in the media. Gender roles still take place in the media. For example, when you see commercials it is principally middle-aged women trying to sell you cleaning products but men can be seen promoting things like beer and sports cars. It's just a subliminal message to show us where our roles are in society.

Letter to President Pierce Essay
This article talks about the contrast between the white man and the red man not understanding one another. Indians as described in this are connected to the earth; people who are one with nature, while the white man is described as people who destroy the earth, or consumers of the earth. As one of the points Seattle has pointed out is how the two men see land. The red man views the land as sacred, of which has to be protected, while the white man see land as an object, a thing, which could be taken whenever they want it. Another comparison by Seattle is the red man being peaceful; in solitude while the white man loves chaos and destruction. Both men cannot understand the other. The red man wonders why the white man steals their horses, slaughters the buffalo that they use for food, and take the land away. Later in the article the red man, or the indian concludes that whether it may be a ââ¬Ëred manââ¬â¢ or a ââ¬Ëwhite manââ¬â¢, both are human beings, and both are connecte d to one another, and what happens to one human, happens to all. Native americans, also known as the ââ¬Ëred manââ¬â¢ were the first people before the white men came into America, so the article tells the truth. White men intruded the red men by hunting buffalo; the Indiansââ¬â¢ main food source so that they would move out or starve to death. White men also took the Indiansââ¬â¢ lands, forcing them to live somewhere else, when the Indians are used to roaming the earth; the land, hunting game, free with no boundaries. The red men were forced to adapt to the life of the white man, and lived in the cities, where it is chaotic, loud and confined. In conclusion, the article tells that all men are equal, and what happens to one happens to another, which is also what other people believe. To name a few : ââ¬Å"Do not do unto others what you want others to do unto you.â⬠(Confucius) and also the bible states, ââ¬Å"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.â⬠(Romans 12:19 KJV) All men believe that there will be redemption to people who take advantage of other people for self-gain.

(Biguenet page 8) As much as Dexter attempts to persuade Mattie not to lease the opposite side of the shotgun she doesnt tune in and continues getting the keys. He advises her, You asking for trouble you do this, Mattie. Trust an old man. Mixing black and white, its nothing but a jug of gasoline looking for a match. Dexter reacts with Only thing they care about, those people, we donââ¬â¢t move in next door to them (Biguenet 23) Dexter remembers a sign at a laundromat saying No coloreds Maids in uniform excepted. Willie reacts with a slight joke about white individuals having a wet dog aroma when their hair is wet and the smell clings on their apparel. Dexter states, Well I dont trust them any more than you do, but I dont trust that mayor of yours, neither and Willie answers Better him then some white man. (Biguenet 24) Later on in the play, Willie stands up to Beau about the speech and attempts to start a argument. A racial side of Beau rises in the play in endeavors to strike back towards Willie saying, You swing by the parking lot of Home Depot in the morning, with all the Mexicans looking for work, I wouldnââ¬â¢t be surprised we wind up some kind of refried bean city before weââ¬â¢re done. (Biguenet page 29) Willie neglects the statement and proceeds with tossing affronts at Beau like So the msyorââ¬â¢s right you white people looking to take things back. All Willie can do is assault towards white people. White man do that, nobody open their mouth. Black man come along, all of a sudden, shit, we got to do something about all this corruption dragging us down. (Biguenet page 29) In the start of Act 2, plastered Eugene stumbles in requesting to rest in the bed however Beau wont allow it. Mattie turns out subsequent to hearing the arguing and advises Beau to give Eugene a chance to have the bed. Furious Eugene irritates seeing Mattie come out the room and has a racial upheaval. He tells Beau I understand all right. I understand I come home after getting cut from the football team and find you in bed screwing that nigger.(Biguenet page 38) This scene may be the most racial and awful on the grounds that Eugene demonstrates some reality behind the clichà ©s behind white individuals and white privelliage. In Act 2 scene 3, Beau and Dexter talk about reconstructing Matties shed that was demolished because of the storm. Dexter has no issue making it known of Mattie and Beau being an unsuit fit. Dexter asks Beau You really think that things are ever gonna change down here? They already going back to the way they always was ââ¬â and worse. Beau reacts But look at us, you and me, black and white, living here together under one roof. Dexter denies in a route by saying Yeah, with a wall running between us. (Biguenet page 46) Scenes later, Dexter indicates at Eugene to begin cleaning and reconstructing the house that Beau and him used to live in, completely mindful Eugene despises living there utilizing it to his advantage as he wants them out (Biguenet page 51) The play closes in a pitiful state of mind, Beau ends his association with Mattie and moves back home. Its unmistakable neither wanted things to end, however Beau clarifies how theyre diverse races will never enable them to proceed on and live happily. The play has its affection filled minutes, yet the primary concern of the play is the contempt that the vast majority of the characters are racial among each other. The steady thought of things returning to the way they were and proceeding racial dispositions need some healing and it wont be simple and occur incidentally; physically as well as social and inwardly.
